This apple crisp has been a family favorite forever! I like the topping made without oatmeal because it gives the apples a nice slightly crisp topping. It’s easier than making a pie, and served with ice cream or whipped cream, it is spectacular! Shall I mention how wonderful your house will smell while this is baking?
8 cups apples, peeled, cored and sliced
½ cup sugar (If using sweeter apples, decrease sugar)
1 ½ tsp cinnamon
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
¼ Cup wheat flour
¼ cup white flour
¼ cup butter, chopped
Dash of salt
In large mixing bowl, toss together apples, sugar and cinnamon.
Place in 2 quart baking dish (no need to grease)
In same bowl, use a pastry blender or two butter knives to chop topping ingredients until butter is in small pieces and mixture is crumbled.
Sprinkle topping over apples.
Bake at 400* for 30 min or until topping is browned.
NOTE: You can add a few extra apples, about 1 TBSP extra sugar, another ½ tsp of cinnamon, and then time and a half the topping (which I do all the time). I’ll use a 9 x 13 pan.
I love to sprinkle a bit of cinnamon on top of the whipped cream because I am a cinnamon freak. It also looks so pretty, and I’m all about that!
